Isaiah

Hello, I’m Isaiah/Heesung Choung, and I’m from SoCal. Nice to meet you! When I’m not climbing up a rock wall, you can find me vigorously attacking (playing) a piano or sitting down in a peaceful place trying to put words on a paper and write something fun.

As a Korean-American, I’ve always wished to speak Korean more fluently but never had the time to truly focus on my skills. Because of this, I often felt that a key part of my identity was missing. So for my gap year, I’m in Seoul, South Korea, dedicating most of my time to intensely study the Korean language. Through my time here, I hope to deepen my understanding of both my cultural heritage and myself. Though I’m not a huge fan of big experiences, I’m excited to learn from all the small little things about trying to emulate the life of a local here in Korea. (So far, that includes pulling a “push” door then accidentally alerting the staff by clicking the wrong button.)

Two other skills I’m hoping to hone during my time here are cooking and archery. In both cases, I’ve always wanted to practice it, but had never had the time to actually learn properly.

And last but not least, I’m excited to meet people from all around the world. So far, I’ve met people from countries like France, Liberia, and Mongolia. It’s been a joy to try to step out of my “American bubble” and try to see the world through their lenses.

만나서 반갑습니다!
