Hi! My name is Elsa, and I am from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I have always wanted to take a
gap year before college to create a meaningful social change, further explore my passions, and
gain new experiences, and Duke Gap Year Program offers exactly that.
Firstly, I want to dedicate my time to deepening my impact. I lead a global platform for youth
journalism that connects writers who are passionate about current global issues and fostering
peace. As a competitive debater, I also teach debate to marginalized communities to equip them
with the confidence and necessary skills to make their voices heard. During my gap year, I hope
to expand my initiatives’ reach and develop new programs that give young people more
opportunities to share their perspectives on issues that matter to them.
Secondly, I want to reconnect with my hobby of playing the zither, a Vietnamese traditional
instrument. With three years of prior experience under my belt, I hope to resume regular
practice and work toward performing by the end of my gap year. I have always loved music and
want to spread this joy with others.
Finally, I am training for the Camino de Santiago next year. I first became interested in the
pilgrimage after watching a Spanish film on it. I have never undertaken anything like this before,
so I am admittedly nervous but also excited for the challenge. It is also the perfect opportunity
for me to hone my Spanish skills. After completing the Camino, I plan to turn the journey into a
backpacking trip across Europe, visiting historical sites I have long wanted to see
